What Happened To My Site?

Wow! I woke up this morning and was going to check my stats and write an article for the web page. Well to my surprise, when I tried to log in, I was greeted with a “Install WordPress” screen. Where did the web site go???? At first I panicked, but after logging in via ftp to my server, I did see that my files all seemed to be there.

I searched the net only to be told, “it’s corrupt, you have to re-install”. That was the last thing I wanted to have to do. Ugh! Thank goodness the site was only in its infancy, I didn’t lose too much. What a P.I.T.A!

So when I attempted to log in again and got the “Install WordPress” screen, I chose a new title and an admin email address and clicked continue. After what seemed to be an eternity, I got an error screen stating that my wp_option was CORRUPT! ARGGHH! I told myself to calm down…it would be okay.

So I copied the error message and figured I would search again. Here is the error message I got:

“wp_options’ is marked as crashed and should be repaired”

I was so excited to find that I wasn’t the only one with that error! I read a couple of forum entries that stated I had to rebuild my MySQL database…”how the heck do I do that?” (i thought). Well one webpage showed a fairly detailed example:

http://paulstamatiou.com/2006/05/31/how-to-quickie-repair-mysql-tables-in-phpmyadmin

So I logged into my hosting account, clicked to enter my database and followed as best I could the instructions. What I noticed was that my wp_options and wp_statpress were both “in use”. The article told me to click on the ones that had “overhead”. I didn’t see anything like that on mine, but  the “in use” i thought might be the same thing. So I clicked on the “in use” components, found a drop down box at the bottom and chose “repair”. It processed for a few secs and then re-displayed the database – the “in use” comments were gone!

So I logged out, and tried to re-load the web site again. YIPPEE!!! It worked! There was my wonderful web site again.

So – long story short – 3 words to remember from this point forward:

1. Back up your website

2. Back up your website

3. Back up your website.

It could have been a whole deal worse – if I had say, 100 posts, tons of comments, sign ups, etc – losing all of that would have been a disaster!

I did see when searching for solution a lot of helpers said to check with your hosting admin if you were not familiar with databases, etc. If you get in there and start messing with things, you might lose any chance of restoring the web site. So be careful.

All is good again!
