Finding A Niche

Making money online has a lot to do with the subject you choose. If you choose to create a web site around “purple gumballs”, I think we agree you are going to find it hard to get a lot of interested traffic wanting to buy purple gumballs. While that is a “way out there” idea, it does point out that you have to be careful when choosing a niche to promote within.

What is a niche? As defined by wikipedia, it is a “focused targetable portion of a market”.  Lucrative niche markets come about when there becomes a demand for a specific service or product and no supply is readily available. Finding those micro niche markets are the mother lode of niche markets – if you can find them. And like the gold rushes of the past, there is a lot of test holes that needed to be dug and a lot of earth to move before a very few miners actually struck it rich.

Now I am not trying to sound negative, but it is extremely difficult to start out with a lucrative niche market without a lot of time and research – or you luck out. Overnight success is a myth – you have to be of the mindset that this is going to take some time and you have to put in that time to get it right.

Don’t try to re-invent the wheel when you are first starting out. All new internet marketers think they will find that niche made of gold. For starters, look at what people want right now. Look at what is hot and get yourself working in those niches. Once you have done that, and learned how to create traffic with a niche that is popular, then you can think about looking at more specific micro niches.

There are many places to look online for hot topics. Google Trends is a big one. They list the top 100 searches at any given time of day. Check out Amazon and other online retailers and look at top purchases being made by people. Go to EBay and see what hot searches are being made. Go to Yahoo Answers and see what questions are being asked and the potential product areas.

While this is a short list, it is a starting place. Write down what looks interesting to you and go from there – it might even get you thinking about more specific topics. Finding that gold mine will take time and research is very important – even when it comes to what is already popular. Get yourself started with what is already popular and make it your goal to find ways to be listed on top of the search engines. That is a subject for another article. Have fun and make money!
